Roof Replacement with Premium Spanish Roof Tiles
From La Escandella.

New Premium Spanish Roof Tiles from La Escandella
We were recently called out to a home in Lesmurdie experiencing ongoing roof leak issues with their existing Swiss profile tiled roof. Unfortunately, this is a problem we encounter regularly throughout Perth and surrounding areas, particularly on older tiled roofs where hidden cracking and water ingress become increasingly common over time.
Swiss profile roof tiles were once a popular roofing choice across Western Australia, however as these roofs age, they can become extremely difficult to maintain once they start to leak. One of the biggest challenges with Swiss profile tiles is that leaks often originate from cracks or breaks hidden beneath overlapping sections of the roof, making them nearly impossible to detect during a standard roof inspection. Ironically the more foot traffic these roofs get from owners or contractors attempting to maintain the roof, the more likely new leaks will appear.

In many cases, locating the exact source of a leak requires large sections of the roof to be stripped back tile by tile until the damaged tile / tiles are finally uncovered. This process can be time-consuming, labour-intensive, expensive for homeowners and especially disheartening when new leaks appear after the initial repairs are completed.

Why Swiss Profile Roofs Often Develop Persistent Leaks

Roof tiles have been used for thousands of years, dating back to ancient Greece, Rome and later throughout Europe, where clay roofing became known for its durability and timeless appearance. Over time, different tile profiles were developed around the world to suit local climates and architectural styles.

While traditional tiled roofing remains an excellent roofing system when high-quality products are used, some older concrete and terracotta tile systems installed throughout Australia have not aged as well as modern roofing materials. Years of exposure to harsh UV conditions, storms, movement in roof structures, general weathering and foot traffic can lead to hairline fractures and concealed breaks.

Because Swiss profile tiles interlock and overlap in complex ways they are difficult to work and when they leak, water can sometimes travel significant distances before
becoming visible inside the home especially if a sarking membrane is installed under the tiles. This makes diagnosis particularly frustrating for homeowners dealing with recurring leaks, ceiling damage, and ongoing repair costs.

In our experience, once these roofs begin developing widespread issues, there are generally only two reliable long-term solutions:
  • Replacing the roof with Colorbond steel roofing.
  • Replacing the existing tiles with a modern premium roofing tile system.

While the homeowners in Lesmurdie were interested in some of the advantages of a Colorbond roof they ultimately decided they preferred the classic look and character of a tiled roof.

Choosing Premium Roof Tiles From Spain

After discussing the available options, the decision was made to replace the existing Swiss profile roof with premium clay roof tiles manufactured by La Escandella in Spain, imported by Bristile.

La Escandella has built a strong international reputation for producing some of the highest quality roof tiles in Europe. Manufactured using advanced kiln-firing technology and premium natural clay materials, these tiles are designed to deliver outstanding durability, weather resistance, and long-term performance in harsh climates, including the intense Australian sun.
Spanish roof tiles have a long and respected history dating back centuries. Spain is internationally recognised for its craftsmanship in ceramic and clay tile manufacturing, combining traditional European roofing methods with modern engineering and production techniques. Today, Spanish clay tiles are widely regarded as one of the premium roofing choices available for both modern and heritage-style homes.

Benefits of La Escandella Roof Tiles

Some of the major benefits of choosing La Escandella roof tiles include:
Exceptional Durability
Clay roof tiles are known for their longevity and resistance to weathering, making them ideal for Australian conditions.

Superior Water Resistance

Modern manufacturing processes help ensure excellent water shedding and reduced risk of hidden leaks compared to ageing tile systems.

Fade Resistance
The colour of kiln-fired clay tiles remains stable for decades, even under strong UV exposure.

Thermal Insulation
Tiled roofs naturally help regulate internal temperatures, improving comfort and potentially reducing cooling costs.

Timeless Street Appeal

Spanish clay tiles provide a premium architectural finish that suits both traditional and contemporary homes.
Personal Experience with La Escandella Tiles The tiles made by La Escandella are excellent quality - in fact, I have them installed on my own home (Planum), so I can personally vouch for their performance and reliability.

Although my own roof is only around five years old, I can honestly say I have experienced absolutely no leak issues whatsoever.

The quality, finish, and overall performance of the roof have been outstanding, which gives me great confidence recommending these tiles to clients looking for a long-term roofing solution if Colorbond is not their preference.
